  • I'm pretty sure I've heard Ariana in interviews saying that at the beginning of her music career when going from like nickelodeon to music. She was pressured to maintain an innocent 'cat valentine' look so I think her style now, the way she likes to do make up and dress is basically what she's always liked for like the past what 7 years. Its just taken time for that to present itself.

  • i'm white, but my 2 cents is that i don't think "blackface" is automatically bad, per say, but it can be awkward even if it's done in a way that isn't like "Minstrel era" kind of racism shit. like the stuff with Trudeau for instance, i think his cosplays were kinda cringe, but it seemed to me that he was often amongst those ethnic groups when he did that shit, and a couple even came forward to say "yeah, we're cool with him doing this, there was no disrespect."

now i realize there can still be people who would be uncomfortable with such things, and i think there's very few context where artificially darkening the skin is completely acceptable, but i lean towards Steven's take more so than not.

  • I made the exact same "cultural appropriation is good" take that Destiny made in one of my college debate classes last year and it created a huge uproar and I got "cancelled" within my own class.

  • I don’t think tanning or bronzing is bad but businesses and industries need to stop hounding black people about their hair is white ppl are gonna appropriate our culture especial to black women.

  • Destiny: if you walk around in blackface AND do a bunch of racist shit that’s pretty dumb. Me: Isn’t the act of black face racist itself?!?!?

  • And everyone just ignores the fact that black women have been straightening their hair for 100 years and using white technology, why is it only cultural appropriation when white people do it?

  • Cultural appropriation just separates cultures, would divide us

  • I’m so sick of people acting like a spray tan is “black fishing.” The only one I have a problem with is that girl who does the tanning injections because that’s dangerous and she’s displays signs of mental illness.

  • can someone explain to black people that everyone likes to be tanned and darker, just no one wants to be as black as an actual full black person….

  • I've been away from this channel for a minute. What's with all these bad take videos I'm seeing? What happened to Destiny the thinker/researcher. This one had zero nuance, projection, and outrage over all the wrong things. He doesnt have the range for convos about black issues, and that's ok, but just dont talk about what you don't know. HOT TAKE: Destiny is losing grey matter and it shows… I think imma head back out.

  • This cultural appropriations topic interests me greatly, i'm curious as to why Ariana Grande did not get accused of cultural appropriation from white culture. Also, if a recent African immigrant were to come to the U.S. and dress in a American black cultural way, would they also be accused of cultural appropriation?

  • Why are people mad at Ariana Grande for "looking black" or having darker skin now as she has gotten older and grown into her career. She started her career in 2008, when she was 13 now she's 27. She's partially Italian/Sicilian, and when she tans she has that beautiful darker skin. All that happened was a young teenager grew into a full-grown adult.

  • Also, to add on, it was earlier than WW2 that the West started influencing Japan.

For a (really) brief summary, for the an extended period of time, prior to around 1850, Japan was completely isolated of their own volition. The reasons being 1) The ruler of the time was worried about the West invading, and erasing the Japanese as a people and 2) The ruler refused almost any (I believe the Dutch and Chinese were the only exceptions) outside influence for fear that they would aid the opposition, and the ruler would lose his power.

In 1850, we kinda said "Hey, we know you're kinda tryna rough it alone in your fuckin mountains, and you have like, jack shit for natural resources. How about we juuuuust force open your country through a multitude of treaties, and we'll become your trade partners (to my understanding, the US was in desperate need for trade partners, and Japan was an easy target.

Once we started exporting products to them, they slowly were able to accrue more knowledge, and vice versa, Artists in particular (including figures like Van Gogh) had incredible interest in trading knowledge, as the art was alien to them.

Around the 1870s, Japanese were actually able to (incredibly new to them at the time) travel. They started being hired in places like Hawaii as workers, and some scholars would travel to different countries like the US and the UK to study. They then brought back that knowledge, and notably in the Taisho period (give or take 1910's) an appreciation and replication of certain Western conventions began to spread through Japan.

While we certainly weren't kind in the way we began trading with them, we've pretty consistently (barring the war, obvously) had a really good symbiotic relationship with Japan as a country.

This is all a tangent over a little comment Destiny made about The US and Japan trading ideas about movies, fuck I have a bit of free time atm.

  • Blackface is one of the most overtly racist things you can do. If we don't care about blackface why give a shit about racism at all then? I don't know how Destiny calls himself progressive this is one of his worst takes.

  • Why do black women straighten their hair then? That's cultural appropriation as well. It's useless. People need to grow the F up.

  • When I think of cultural appropriation I think of people getting highly religiously/culturally important tattoos put on their body for no reason or wearing/using religious/cultural tools in a mocking/ oblivious way. I think wearing clothing and having hairstyles from other cultures is ok. Blackface is pretty fucked though.

  • Some people, whether famous or not, ignore race and absorb themselves into whatever cultural influence they find themselves wrapped up in. When they adapt to it and take on it's persona they get hated for it? Sorry, race is not a real thing. It is a cultural construct. The effects of discrimination based on "race" is a very real though, but this is just someone being absorbed/assimilated into a culture IMO. I may be wrong. She may very well just be making a calculated decision, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of doubt. This isn't like Elvis establishing fame and fortune off the works of artistic talents of black musicians.

  • The issue with cultural appropriation when it comes to Black women is that everyone else finds us repulsive and less than, but when non-Black women imitate our common characteristics, y’all think they’re the best thing since sliced bread.

It’s not okay or cool to think we’re crap and then two seconds later think Kim K is revolutionary for wearing cornrows and Ariana is the hottest thing out there for her “urban aesthetic.”

  • One issue with cultural appropriation is that it pushes black people out of spaces they have made, for example a lot of these pop stars or instagram thots dont have a shred of talent and they are 100% replaceable with one another.

If we are gonna have someone ripping off these people, why not have it be undeserved people who come from these communities?

  • This may not make for a great and/or satisfactory argument for Destiny (I'm not sure, not claiming to know him here), but it seems to me that if things like saying the n-word in private and black face are problematic for the majority of black people then you should just avoid it out of respect. Maybe I'm misunderstanding his takes on these issues but I don't see what's wrong with looking at it that way, and I don't see the need to try and defend their use when that seems to be the current circumstance of these issues. It's probably a little too feels before reals but maybe a little emotional appeal is necessary when we have the kind of racial divides we have. Is there anything wrong with looking at it this way?
