Real-time render test for GDC 2018 – Unity's short film 'Windup'



Hey guys, it’s been a while. I have been working on our upcoming animated short film called ‘Windup’. And this is a test scene from it!

The test scene is a collaboration of Laurent Harduin, Jacob Norris, Colin Thomas and me. Special thanks to Melissa Chou, Sebastien Lagarde, John Parsaie who helped us finish it.

This short film will be the proof point to show that we can achieve animated feature quality and rendered real-time in Unity engine.
Rather than using methods seen in VFX, we take techniques from the AAA game production that push the visual bar while being real-time.

  • Possibly a dumb question, but I was curious as to why most professional stuff I've seen in Unity these days have multiple scenes for geometry, lighting, and colliders?

  • It's admittedly very impressive. But the shadow translucency transition and glitching needs fixed. -That, or bake it in or design around it.

  • Oh i see, this video is made for GDC cause it's a game engine. Even though i was thinking this could really help independent animator, small animation studio or students. Obviously saving on budget and time 😀

    there's a wierd render issue on the grass near the top of the round hole though, making it look like it's a lower FPS. could that be due to video compression?.

  • OMG. I studied towards vfx because of visual fidelity and a few years ago did not even consider a job in games. Things are changing. Soon time to ditch vray and start using unity or unreal engine. Interesting times:)

  • 3d still <> 3d animation. Make her move with this kind of graphics and add more ai driven animated characters then it would be impressive for a game engine showing.

  • Awesome! Can't believe it's done in Unity. Excited to see what can be achieved in Unity 2018. But as I understood from blogpost HD SRP won't be avaible in first offical release of Unity 2018?
